Prophets foretell the Signs of Christ’s Second Coming.
For thousands of years, followers of Jesus Christ have looked forward to the Second Coming as a time of peace and joy. But before the Savior comes, the people of the earth will experience great trials and calamities. Our Heavenly Father wants us to be prepared for these troubles.
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Matt 24:6-8
And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall waxcold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Matt 24:10-13
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Matt 24:14-15
God, our Father, wants us to be spiritually prepared when the Savior comes in His glory. Therefore, He has given us signs, which are events that will tell us when the Savior’s Second Coming is near. Throughout the ages God has revealed these signs to His prophets. He has said that all faithful followers of Christ will know what the signs are and will be watching for them. Matt 24:32-33 and D&C 45:39
If we are obedient and faithful we will study the scriptures so that we will know the signs to be prepared for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Some of these signs have already taken place, some are now being fulfilled and others will be fulfilled in the near future.
God Calls Prophets in every age to declare his truths
Prophets are men who have been commissioned by God to declare His truths to His children. God speaks to prophets directly out of Heaven, or by sending Angels to declare to them His message for us. Adam was God’s first prophet. He was followed by Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (Israel), Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel Daniel, Amos and so forth.
The Old testament prophet, Jeremiah explained, ” Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, ‘Before I formed the in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. ‘ Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child (Jeremiah was only age 19 at the time). But the Lord said unto me, ‘Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.’ Jeremiah 1:4-7
The Prophet Amos declared, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing until he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” Amos 3:7
Peter explained, “For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. Acts 3:22-23
The Savior said, “Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh; And the anger of the Lord is kindled, and his sword is bathed in heaven, and it shall fall upon the inhabitants of the earth. And the arm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the day cometh that they who will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut off from among the people.” D&C 1:12-14
Apostasy to Precede the Second Coming
Prophecy did not stop with the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On the third day, Christ rose from the dead. As a resurrected being he prophesied to his Apostles of his return in glory in the Last Days. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3)
The Savior foretold the events preceding his Second Coming and commanded his followers to carefully watch for the signs and to prepare for that day by heeding the commandments given by his prophets. (Matt 24:42-44)
The Savior’s Apostles explained these truths to the people, and foretold of a universal apostasy or falling away from the truths taught by Christ that would occur before he would return in glory at His Second Coming. They also foretold that the gospel of Jesus Christ and His Church would one day be restored in its fullness upon the earth in the Latter days.
Restoration of the Gospel Precedes Second Coming
The Apostle Peter declared that after Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven, He would return, but it would not be until after the Restoration of His Gospel in the latter days. “Repent ye therefore,” he said, “and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. Acts 3:19-21
Prophets & Apostles foretell Signs of the Last Days
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 2 Peter 3:1-10
Christ has Restored His Gospel – Says These are the Last Days
When the circumstances were right, God the Father once again reached out to His children in love. He once again called a prophet to declare His truths to mankind. In 1820, God spoke once again as he had done in ancient times, to a young man named Joseph Smith, who he called to be His Prophet of the Last Dispensation of time before the Second Coming of the Lord. Through him the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ was restored to the earth once more.
Joseph Smith was blessed with the spirit of prophecy and was commanded to declare the words of God to His children for the last time before Christ returns.
The Voice of Warning is unto all People
Once again, in our day, the Lord has called prophets and apostles to proclaim his words and to prepare us for his second coming. In a revelation given on November 1, 1831, the Lord delcared,
“Hearken, saith the voice of him who dwells on high, and whose eyes are upon all men; yea, verily I say: Hearken ye people from afar; and ye that are upon the islands of the sea, listen together. For verily the voice of the Lord is unto all men, and there is none to escape; and there is no eye that shall not see, neither ear that shall not hear, neither heart that shall not be penetrated. And the voice of warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my disciples, whom I have chosen in these last days. D&C 1:1-4
Wherefore the voice of the Lord is unto the ends of the earth, that all that will hear may hear: Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh; D&C 1:11-12
Great Calamities will Precede the Second Coming
In the 24th chapter of Matthew, the Apostle explains that when Jesus left teaching in the Temple, he went out to the mount of Olives. “And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? Matt 24:3
Christ Reveals Signs of His Second Coming
In a revelation given March 7, 1831, through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the LORD explains that He is “Alpha and Omega.” He know s the beginning and the end. He has restored his everlasting gospel covenant “to be a light to the world, and to be a standard for my people, and for the Gentiles to seek to it, and to be a messenger before my face to prepare the way before me. Wherefore, come ye unto it, and with him that cometh I will reason as with men in days of old, and I will show unto you my strong reasoning.” D&C 45:7-10
This revelation about the Last Days before Christ’s Second Coming gives great detail to the prophecy given to his disciples on the Mount of Olives. In this revelation, Christ explains the following:
“And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth. And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound. And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fulness of my gospel; But they receive it not; for they perceive not the light, and they turn their hearts from me because of the precepts of men. And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land. But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die.
And there shall be earthquakes also in divers places, and many desolations; yet men will harden their hearts against me, and they will take up the sword, one against another, and they will kill one another.
And now, when I the Lord had spoken these words unto my disciples, they were troubled. And I said unto them: Be not troubled, for, when all these things shall come to pass, ye may know that the promises which have been made unto you shall be fulfilled.” D&C 45:26-35
The Saints are to Gather Together to Prepare for Second Coming
In a Revelation given through the Prophet Joseph Smith, September 26, 1830, the Savior explains that in the Last Days He will gather together all those who will listen to the voice of his prophets and harden not their hearts.
“Wherefore,” the Savior says, “the decree hath gone forth from the Father that they shall be gathered in unto one place upon the face of this land, to prepare their hearts and be prepared in all things against the day when tribulation and desolation are sent forth upon the wicked.
For the hour is nigh and the day soon at hand when the earth is ripe; and all the proud and they that do wickedly shall be as stubble; and I will burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts, that wickedness shall not be upon the earth;
For the hour is nigh, and that which was spoken by mine apostles must be fulfilled; for as they spoke so shall it come to pass; For I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory, with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years, and the wicked shall not stand. D&C 29:8-11
All are Invited to Prepare for the Great Day of the Lord
“Prepare yourselves for the great day of the Lord. Watch, therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour. Let them, therefore, who are among the Gentiles flee unto Zion. And let them who be of Judah flee unto Jerusalem, unto the mountains of the Lord’s house. Go ye out from among the nations, even from Babylon, from the midst of wickedness, which is spiritual Babylon. D&C 133:10-14
Building of the New Jerusalem to Precede the Second Coming
Near the time of the coming of Jesus Christ, the faithful Saints will build a righteous city, a city of God, called the New Jerusalem. Jesus Christ Himself will rule there. (See 3 Nephi 21:23–25; Moses 7:62–64; Articles of Faith 1:10.) The Lord said the city will be built in the state of Missouri in the United States (see D&C 84:2–3).
John the Revelator Prophecies of the Last Days
Chapter 6: Christ opens the six seals, and John sees the events therein—In the fifth seal, he sees the Christian martyrs; and in the sixth, he sees the signs of the times.
The marriage supper of the Lamb is made ready—The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy—Christ is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Know the Signs that Precede the Second Coming
Speaking of His Second Coming, the Lord said, “The hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven” (D&C 49:7). He taught this with the parable of the fig tree. He said that when we see a fig tree putting forth leaves, we can tell that summer will soon come. Likewise, when we see the signs described in the scriptures, we can know that His coming is near. (See Matthew 24:32–33.)
The Lord gives these signs to help us. We can put our lives in order and prepare ourselves and our families for those things yet to come.
We have been warned of calamities and told to prepare for them, but we can also look forward to the coming of the Savior and be glad. The Lord said, “Be not troubled, for, when all these things [the signs] shall come to pass, ye may know that the promises which have been made unto you shall be fulfilled” (D&C 45:35). He said those who are righteous when He comes will not be destroyed “but shall abide the day. And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; … and their children shall grow up without sin. … For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver” (D&C 45:57–59).
